Both Yunnan and Guizhou lay on the Yunnan-Guizhou plateau and next to the south of the Tibetan plateau. The region borders Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar and the altitude is over 1,000 meters. The area of Yunnan is 224,000 square kilometers and the one of Guizhou is 170,000. The population of Yunnan is approximately 40,000,000 and the one of Guizhou is 34,100,000.
Even today, many Chinese people think that area as a and it is true that the area is a mysterious land where still keep the great natural beauty. It was sunny and the air was clear in Yunnan. But, we knew that there are many environmental problems also.
The wastewater treatment projects for some lakes in China still focused mainly on to reduce heavy metals, COD and BOD. The eutrophication remains as one of serious problems.
The growth rate of the industry that include the tertiary industry in the region of Dianchi Lake basin, locates in Kunming city of Yunnan, constantly more than 11 % for last 20 years. The total P-concentration of the wastewater, which is both industrial and municipal, achieve approximately 0.5 - 1.0 mg/l in the region.
The result of measuring the density of algae verified that the Lake Dianchi is heavily eutrophic. The thickness of the layer of sediment in the middle of the lake is more than 1 meter and the sediment contains a large quantity of detritus as much as phosphorus.
We set up a base in Kunming city and inspected the area between Xingyi city of Guizhou and Chinpi city of Yunnan, where borders Vietnam. There are many environmental problems, which are not only water pollution but also air pollution, soil erosion and so on. |
